Well written story, really enjoyed reading through it while taking a short break from the essay I'm supposed to be doing today! As for the retrovirus thing, yeah pretty believable, since I think that is the current delivery method for the current generation of genetic medicines. Not sure on that, need to look it up (or take that title for the essay instead of electrical activity of the heart!)

Author's Response: When I wrote this story about twenty years ago, using a retro virus to modify DNA seemed a feasible means of changing cellular structure. A report on electrical activity of the heart? The heart gets all the credit for pumping blood but much of the work is done by blood vessels which are made of the same muscle fiber as the heart. Since our blood is salt water based, it conducts electricity, which causes the blood vessels to contract, helping to pump blood. You can feel the vessels moving when you check your pulse. One way check valves in the vessels prevent the blood from flowing backwards. Also, when the electrical pulse rate signals become too fast (fibrillation), the blood circularly system stops working. A defibrillator does not restart the heart. It actually stops its fluttering so it can obey electrical signals from the brain and beat normally. This Review Response has wandered off the subject, however, it is very late at night and I have a tendency to ramble. Thank you for your review.

A retrovirus contains an enzyme called Reversed RNA Transcriptase, this enzyme transforms the RNA into DNA in the host cell.
The orthomyxovirus (influenza) is a virus with negative single-stranded RNA that only affects the translation of mRNA in the cell so that the components needed for a new influenza virus are crafted.

A retrovirus would "theoretically" have the effects you described here, albeit much slower and to a much, much lesser extent.

Author's Response: I took most of the pre-med courses when working at a university. (When you work there, classes are free) I used what little I remembered as inspiration to write this story. Also, you are correct when you say that the effects would be slower and less extensive. Such changes would probably kill any living creature. I had them using a crash cart twice to jump start his heart during his transmutation. The retrovirus was just a plot device used to write a TG story. Benjamin Franklin once said that a wise man never looks to closely at what goes into his sausage.

The influensa virus is not a retrovirus.

Author's Response: Perhaps, you should have given us a detailed definition of retrovirus? Almost all fiction requires some suspension of disbelief. That is why it is called fiction. For example: A Wizard in the SRU store or a medallion worn around the neck that, when rubbed by an article of clothing, changes the medallion wearer into the duplicate of the clothing wearer. Or, a six foot four inch tall guy with muscles applying a tub of foundation cream with a putty knife to cover his six o'clock shadow, putting on a strapless dress and six inch stiletto heels to go dancing. And, all the straight guys elbowing each other out of the way as they try to be the first to ask the vision of feminine loveliness to dance. Some times, a little suspension of disbelief is necessary.
